Tributes from Teammates
MJ wasn't just the best player I ever played with — he was the best leader. He made every single person on that team believe they were important.
He could have scored 30 every night, but he'd rather get you the ball and watch you succeed. That's the kind of person he was.
Michael changed my life. Not with basketball — with character. He taught me what it means to be a professional and a man.
The MJ Story
Michael James Thompson, known to fans and teammates as "MJ," was born in Chicago, Illinois, with a basketball in his hands — or so the story goes. In truth, his love affair with the game began at age five on the cracked asphalt courts of Lincoln Park, where he spent every afternoon perfecting his crossover dribble and dreaming of playing under the bright lights.
At Lincoln Park High School, Michael became the most decorated player in the school's history, earning All-State honors three consecutive years and leading the Lions to back-to-back state championships. His combination of court vision, leadership, and clutch shooting caught the attention of college scouts nationwide.
Michael accepted a full scholarship to Duke University, where he became a four-year starter and led the Blue Devils to the 2008 NCAA National Championship. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and graduated with a degree in Sports Management.
Drafted 12th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010, Michael quickly established himself as one of the NBA's premier point guards. Over his 14-year professional career, he won two NBA Championships, was selected to six All-Star teams, and earned a reputation as one of the fiercest competitors and most selfless teammates in the league.
Off the court, Michael was equally impactful. He founded the Thompson Youth Basketball Academy in 2015, providing free coaching, mentorship, and academic support to over 500 at-risk youth in the Chicago area. "Basketball gave me everything," he often said. "The least I can do is give it back."
Team Pride & Leadership
Michael was the heart and soul of every team he played for. From high school to the NBA, his leadership, work ethic, and selfless play elevated everyone around him.
