A Life Among Nature

Ranger, gardener, and steward of the wild

Robert Mitchell

Robert Mitchell

1952 - 2024

Robert Mitchell discovered his love for nature as a boy, exploring the forests and trails of the Pacific Northwest with his grandfather. That early connection with the natural world grew into a lifelong passion that shaped every aspect of his life.

After earning his degree in Forestry from Oregon State University, Robert spent 30 years with the National Park Service, eventually becoming the head ranger at Crater Lake National Park. His deep knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecology and his gift for storytelling made him a beloved figure among park visitors and staff alike.

In retirement, Robert became an avid gardener, transforming his modest backyard into a certified wildlife habitat that attracted birds, butterflies, and curious neighbors. He volunteered with the local Audubon Society and led weekly nature walks for schoolchildren, passing on his love of the outdoors to a new generation.

Robert believed that everyone could make a difference for the planet, one tree at a time. His gentle wisdom, infectious curiosity, and deep respect for all living things will be remembered by everyone who had the privilege of walking alongside him through the woods.

I still remember the afternoon walks we shared, when the world felt simple and beautiful. You had this incredible gift for making everyone around you feel truly seen. I will carry those conversations in my heart forever.

A mentor, a friend, and one of the kindest souls I've ever known. The way you guided our team with patience and wisdom — that legacy lives on in every person you touched. Rest in peace.

M

Words cannot express how much you meant to our family. Every holiday, every Sunday dinner — your laughter was the melody that held us all together. We miss you more than words can say.

A

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. A light in our parish community — always the first to volunteer, always the last to leave. I will keep them in my daily prayers.

F

May the angels lead them into paradise. A faithful servant and a blessing to all who knew them. Their kindness was a daily sermon more eloquent than any I could ever deliver.
